Know where your scent goes

Deer and boar trust their noses more than their eyes. HunTracker's scent cone draws on the hunt map where the wind is carrying your scent right now, from where you stand and from the stands on your association's district map, so you can choose the stand and the approach that keep you downwind.

How the scent cone works

The forecast wind, where you look

The wind's direction and speed come from the weather forecast for the part of the map you are looking at, and follow you as you pan. Streaks drift across the map with it, and a readout names the direction and where your scent is drifting.

How far scent carries

The cone's length follows how stable the air is, worked out from the wind, the cloud and the height of the sun: short when the air churns on a sunny afternoon, long and narrow on a still, clear night.

How sure the direction is

A light, shifting wind opens the cone wide, and in near calm it becomes a circle; a steady breeze keeps it narrow. Dashed arcs mark 100 and 300 metres.

The lie of the land

On the 3D map the cone bends with the ground: along a valley, back from a ridge, and up or down the slopes as the sun warms or cools them. Dashed sides mean the ground makes the direction a guess.

From you and your stands

Your own cone follows you during a hunt. Zoom in on your district map and every stand casts one too, and so does a feeder or any other place you tap.

Laid on the ground

The map draws the cones itself, so they stay in place as you pan, zoom or tilt: under your route and pins, over the district borders.

How it works

  1. Open a hunt's map and tap the Tools button.
  2. Under Overlays, switch on Scent cone, and Wind if you want the streaks.
  3. Leave Adjust for terrain on, so the ground bends the cones on the 3D map.
  4. Zoom in on your district map to see the cones from its stands.
  5. Pick the stand and the approach that keep your scent away from the game.

Questions and answers

Is the scent cone exact?

No. It is an estimate from the forecast wind and well-established rules for how air carries scent, not a measurement. Wind near the ground eddies around trees, hedges and buildings, so check it on the spot with a wind checker before you settle in.

Where does the wind come from?

From the weather forecast for the area on the map, the same source as the app's weather report, refreshed as you move around the map. It needs a connection to load.

Why does the cone change length?

Because air carries scent differently. Turbulent air on a sunny day breaks it up close by; stable air, at night or with little wind under a clear sky, carries it much farther in a narrow plume. The readout says which it is.

Does it work for my stands?

Yes. The stands on your association's district map each cast a cone once you zoom in close enough to see them, and so does any place you tap on the map.
