What to record in a hunting log

Date and time
The day, and the time of the shot or the sighting. Over a few seasons it shows when the game moves.
Place and district
Where you hunted, down to the high seat, the field or the district, so you can go back and compare.
Type of hunt
Alone, guided, or a driven hunt with others.
Weather and moon
Temperature, wind direction and the moon phase: the conditions that decide a morning.
Species, sex and class
What you harvested or saw, with its sex and age class as your country's law sorts them.
Shot distance and placement
How far, and where the shot struck: the honest record of your shooting.
Tracking
If the game had to be tracked, how long it took and where it was found.
Weight and trophy
Field-dressed weight, and the trophy's measurement or score where there is one.
Tag number
The tag fitted to the carcass, so your log matches the official record.
Equipment
Rifle, calibre, ammunition and optic: what worked, and what did not.
Observations
What you saw but did not shoot: often the most useful line in the log next season.
The story
A few sentences about the day. In ten years, this is the part you will read.

A paper log, or a hunting log app?

Paper works, and its battery never runs out. But it does not add up: counting last season's harvests or finding the morning you saw the big boar means leafing through pages, and a lost notebook is a lost season.

The HunTracker hunting log app keeps the same columns as this sheet, puts the photos and, with Pro, the GPS path with each entry, and adds everything up in statistics. With Pro it is backed up, and it exports to Excel whenever you need it on paper.

Questions and answers

Is the hunting log template free?

Yes. Print it, copy it and share it as you like.

Is a personal hunting log the same as the official one?

No. Many countries require official records, such as harvest reports, a hunting ground's logbook or a tag register. A personal log is your own record alongside them; keep the official ones as the rules where you hunt require.

Can I fill in the template on a computer?

Yes. Download the CSV and open it in Excel, Numbers, LibreOffice or Google Sheets.

Start this season's journal.

Free to download for iPhone and Android, with a free version that has no time limit.
