The moon and hunting

Around the full moon the nights are light enough to see game in the open, which is why boar hunters in many countries plan their nights at the wallow or the field edge around it. Around the new moon the nights are dark. Whether and how you may hunt at night is set by law, and it differs from country to country.

The full moon rises around sunset and sets around sunrise. The first quarter is in the sky in the evening and the first half of the night, the last quarter in the second half of the night and the morning. A clear sky, or snow on the ground, makes the same moon far brighter.

Whether the moon changes how game moves is argued over in every hunting lodge. Many hunters find deer feed more at night around the full moon and move less in the morning; studies point in different directions, and weather, pressure and the time of year often matter more. Your own records are the best guide.

Why does another calendar give a different day?

A full moon happens at the same instant everywhere, but clocks differ: one just before midnight in London is already the next day in Budapest or Helsinki. This page shows UK time; the other language versions show their own countries' time.

Is it legal to hunt at night by moonlight?

It depends on the country and the species. Some countries allow night hunting of wild boar or predators, others forbid hunting after dark, and lights and night-vision optics have rules of their own. Check the law where you hunt.
